Memorials

Memorial Gates dome, Constitution Hill, London. These Gates were erected to honour the five million men and women from the Indian subcontinent, Africa and the Caribbean who served with the Armed Forces in both World Wars. It was inaugurated on the 6th November 2002 by HM The Queen.

As we have been asked a few times about the criteria used for selecting names to be included in the pavilion I asked the VC and GC Association - the reply I received is as follows dated 13.01.05:

"Regarding the Memorial Gates on Constitution Hill. The criteria for the names of recipients of the George Cross included in the pavilion was: those who were nationals of countries with the Indian sub-continent, Africa or the Caribbean as well as those who served in, or were attached to, Commonwealth forces in the same areas. The Gates specifically remember those who served in one, or the other, or both of the World Wars."

Should any reader have further queries on this matter please contact the Association as we at GC-Database.co.uk are not in any way responsible for these decisions.
